The Lac du Der-Chantecoq (Der-Chantecoq Lake) spreads out its 4,800 hectares in the Humid Champagne region. Surrounded by forests, some of which are marshy, it offers all the food and space necessary for migratory birds such as the Common Cranes (Grus grus). Insects, larvae, small rodents and amphibians abound, as well as seeds and cereals from neighbouring fields. Hornbeam, hazel and oak trees are very common in the forests (cranes love acorns). The Humid Champagne extends over three departments: Aube, Marne and Haute-Marne.
