Studies have shown that elephants are able to understand the intentions and emotions of other individuals. They are endowed with empathy and highly developed cognitive abilities. They can comfort, adopt orphans, form alliances, help each other to get out little ones stuck in mud, ... as many acts of assistance implying that they understand the situation of the other and its feelings.
