Off Houaïlou, on the east coast of Grande-Terre, the barrier reef is not continuous and different types of reef surrounded islets appear between the barrier reef and the coast. These islets have varying degrees of submersion, some are still fully emerged and have clear contours bordered by white sand while others have disappeared underwater, indicating a probable subsidence of this part of the island.
