It looks a bit like a heron, although smaller, and the same posture with a raised leg. The Crested Kagu (Rhynochetos jubatus) is light gray but when it spreads its wings, it shows black and white spots. It is adorned with a crest of erectile feathers. Its beak and legs remain orange until adulthood (2 or 3 years). It spends its time on the ground because its frame does not allow it to fly, which makes it vulnerable to rats, wild cats and dogs. It feeds on earthworms, snails and lizards without neglecting larvae, spiders, centipedes, grasshoppers, bugs and beetles.
