Emblematic bird of the lake

In France, Common Cranes (Grus grus) are primarily migratory. However, each year, the Champagne-Ardenne League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) observes an increase in the number of couples of cranes that winter at the Lac du Der-Chantecoq. Having become the emblematic bird of the region, the Common Crane is particularly noticeable on early autumn mornings, when tens of thousands of these birds take off from the lake at the same time. The Lac du Der is now the main observation site in the world for this species, which attracts thousands of enthusiasts every year.
