The skin of the elephant is fragile. It has a low density of hair and many folds housing parasites. Without sweat nor sebaceous glands, the skin of the elephant is dry and must often be moistened, for instance through frequent baths. It is then protected with mud or dust. Baths also contribute to the animal thermoregulation.
