From birth to age 4, the African elephant increases its weight regularly from 20 to 44lbs (9 to 20kg) per month. At the time of puberty, females continue to grow steadily, while males’ growth accelerates. As elephants grow up all their lives, they can reach, at age 60, differences of the order of 2 tons.
