The Hina cave, located at a depth of 98ft (30m) near the Moumu path on the elevated Makatea atoll, is accessible by steps carved into the rock. Its freshwater basin is fed by the water table. From the vault of the Vaimarui cave, its first room, hangs a 19.6in (50cm) wide stalactite called the 'elephant's foot'.
