The Haut-Koenigsbourg castle is one of the most famous medieval fortresses in France. Since its construction in 1147, it has always dominated the plain of Alsace, and it sheltered villagers on numerous occasions. In turn French, German, and even a den of brigands for a few years, it was partially destroyed and rebuilt several times. Its ruins were classified in 1862, and the castle was declared a Historic Monument in its entirety in 1993. Today, it is one of the most visited sites in Alsace.
