Discovered in 1797, Akamaru was evangelized in 1834 by the missionary Honoré Laval, who celebrated the first mass there. Dedicated in 1845, the Notre Dame de la Paix church was added two octagonal-based dissymmetrical bell towers in 1862 to recall the architecture of the cathedral of Chartres, Laval's region of origin. At the end of July, a pilgrimage transports the metal statue of the Holy Virgin adorned with a black pearl necklace to the St-Michel cathedral of Mangareva and brings it back on August 15th.
