Ecosystem engineers

Seabirds are true ecosystem engineers thanks to the link they establish between the marine and terrestrial environments. The island soils fertility is improved by their land transfer of marine nutrients which subsequently return into the marine ecosystem as a result of the natural soil alteration. This enrichment of the surrounding waters promotes the productivity of corals and the multiplication of fish.
