The scales produced by the fish dermis form small tiles under their skin. They vary and are more or less visible according to the species. Some fish do not have any, while others, like this one, have large, ctenoid scales with dark, conspicuous edges. One speak of pearled scales when the white color edged with black of the scales makes them look like little pearls.
