Ouvéa is an atoll or ocean shoal made up of several reefs and peripheral islets bordering a central lagoon. Isolated, it does not receive any terrigenous input which makes its waters more transparent than around Grande-Terre and reduces its biodiversity and endemism. However, its waters are home to respectable densities of several emblematic species such as rays and sharks.
