The heavy cylindrical bell towered Notre-Dame de Lourdes Chapel is located in the municipality of Easo, a coastal village of Lifou island located in the customary district of Wetr. Easo means 'the fire which smokes' in drehu, the local language, in tribute to the whalers who used to light fires there to burn and melt the fat of the whales they butchered on the beach in order to extract its oil.
