The African elephant’s ears have a key role in the animal thermoregulation. They are made of a very thin skin and have a large network of blood capillaries. More than 10 liters of blood pass through them every minute ! By flapping the ears, spraying them with water or dust, the elephant manages to cool down its body temperature. In case of cool weather, it keeps the ears against to heat up the blood capillaries.
