Polishing gives the crystal its full brilliance thanks to a polishing wheel. This operation is the opposite of sandblasting, which produces more opaque parts. René Lalique favoured the satin-polished finish, which allows certain parts of a glass object to be matted (by sandblasting or acid bath), and then the rest to be polished in order to reinforce the transparency and shine. After the shift from glass to crystal in the 1950s, satin-polished crystal is still the success of the Lalique crystal works, which is constantly guided by the search for beauty and perfection.
