The summit of Puy de Sancy, at an altitude of 6,187 feet (1,886 metres), offers a 360-degree panorama to hikers and skiers. Formerly known as the Puy de la Croix because of the iron cross on its summit, Puy de Sancy welcomed the parishioners of Saint Donat on the 6th of August, on Saint Sixte Day. They used to say, in patois, that they were going to the ‘Pé de San Sixte’ (Puy de Saint Sixte), which quickly became Sancy. Every year, on the same date, an accompanied hike continues to be organised starting in each town of the Sancy massif.
