Riquewihr gives a realistic representation of an Alsatian village from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its heritage has remained almost intact despite the wars that affected Alsace throughout the centuries. Riquewihr remains attached to its wine-growing traditions but does not intend to become a city-museum. The presses still operate during autumn in the courtyards of its traditional houses. The village is known for its AOC (controlled designation of origin) wines such as Alsace, Crémant d'Alsace, and Alsace Grand Cru.
