From the ore to the knife blade

Originally, some Corsican cutlers made knife blades from an ore. The magnetite, or iron ore, was extracted from mines, including the mine of Farinole which was mined by the Genoese in the 16th and 17th century. They have been progressively phased out because of high operating costs. The metal bar was obtained after crushing the magnetite and heating it with wood charcoal.
