The creation of the Haras National du Pin at the beginning of the 18th century responded to the royal desire to produce the most efficient horses for transport, agricultural work, military cavalry, and the court of Versailles. Its main activity was to select breeds and produce horses, the finest specimens of which were intended for breeding. After the Revolution, the Constituent Assembly decreed in January 1790 the sale of the Pin stallions. Only forty stallions were kept there until March 1793, when their sale became inevitable. The stud farm and the stallion depots were re-established by an imperial decree of July 4, 1806.
