From slum to Art Deco houses

Once occupied by mills in the 18th century, this plot of land on the Montmartre hillock became a wasteland in the 19th century. Under the pressure of Baron Haussmann’s major works, the destitute and miserable Parisians who could not find a place to live were pushed to the outskirts of the city. A shanty town, the Maquis de Montmartre, gradually grew up on the side of the present-day Rue Lepic and Rue Caulaincourt, made up of unhealthy shacks, populated by artists and ragpickers. The construction of Avenue Junot in 1910 and a suspicious fire caused the slum to disappear, replaced by luxurious Art Deco villas.
