Reinforced concrete instead of oak tree

The framework of Reims Cathedral is no longer the “forest” rebuilt in oak in 1481. During the First World War, the cathedral was hit by more than 300 shells and its roof structure burned to the ground. The collapsed vaults in many places left the building open to the four winds. The architect Henri Deneux chose to rebuild the structure in reinforced concrete, inspired by the small wood frames of the Renaissance. Hundreds of thin beams were connected to each other by wooden fasteners. Since 1938, the structure has been under surveillance, but it has stood the test of time very well and has not required any further restoration.
