Located at the eastern end of the Minahasa Peninsula in Indonesia's North Sulawesi, the Tangkoko Batuangus Nature Reserve is bordered by the Molucca Sea. Its black sand coast of volcanic origin recalls the presence of Mount Tangkoko (3638ft/1109m), a today inactive volcano, around which the first conservation area of the reserve was created in 1919.
