The Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), of which there remains around 400 specimens, is the smallest of the 8 listed tiger subspecies. It lives exclusively on the island of Sumatra, the last bastion of tigers in Indonesia after the extinction of the Java and Bali tigers in the 20th century. It is characterized by its darker coat, with large black closer and sometimes double streaks also covering its front legs and the collar at the back of the male's head.
