Unlike the African elephant and the Sumatran male elephant, the Sumatran female elephant does not have prominent tusks. Her reduced tusks do not exceed her mouth. The matriarchal social structure of the species is also more variable and complex than in Africa. The basic unit is the female and her cub who stays with its mother for 7-8 years and sometimes all its life.
