The statue of Schongauer

The Unterlinden Museum features the largest collection of prints and paintings by Martin Schongauer (1445-1491). Among the monumental works of the Colmar painter, the museum presents the “Altarpiece of the Dominicans” and the “Altarpiece of the Virgin”. The Schongauer Society, created in honour of the 15th-century artist, has managed the Unterlinden Museum since its opening in 1853. A few years later, the museum commissioned a statue of Martin Schongauer from the painter Auguste Bartholdi. Made of pink sandstone, the statue has been returned to its original location in the north gallery of the cloister.
