Kalpitiya is a coastal town located in western region of Puttalam District in northern Sri Lanka. The Kalpitiya peninsula consists of a total fourteen islands. It is developing as a tourist destination. Fishing is giving local people a regular income to look after their family. Fresh fish is usually being dried on the sun in order to facilitate its storage. Historical records of the town are going far back reveal that the peninsula was associated with maritime trade and smuggling escapades since ancient times. It was first colonised by the Portuguese in early 17th Century. It is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural town, majority of Kalpitiya residents are Muslims, while Sinhalese are the second largest in the town.
