Before firing, clay pieces should be sundried for about 2 days. Drying is a delicate step; it should not be too fast or non-uniform otherwise clay pieces can crack and break during firing. Lenca women turn the clay, Lenca men gather some wood to prepare the hearth. After about 1:30 of firing, the pottery whitens: it is the sign that they are fully fired.
