Drought and erosion

A hunting ground for these Marquesans, the island of Eiao has no rivers and only a few minor springs that come out near the sea level on the northwest coast. Subject to periodic droughts, its vegetation is all the more sparse as the numerous sheep that populate the island have removed its plant cover, exposing the soil to an accelerated erosion.
