The Drakensberg, whose name derives from dragon and mountain in Dutch, culminate at 11 319ft (3 450m). Some peaks look like dragon teeth, the Zulus see a wall of spearheads. Before the arrival of Bantu fighters, these mountains were the sanctuary of San or Bushmen art, their first inhabitants, a peaceful people of hunter-gatherers.
