The theme of the Salon d'Apollon (Apollo Gallery) in the Louvre is inspired by the course of the sun through time and space. Charles Le Brun provided sketches for 12 medallions for the 12 months of the year in the tradition of medieval paintings relating the seasons. Eight were painted by Jacques Gervaises from 1667 to 1670 and four by Louis Arban in 1850 according to the designs of Le Brun. The salon also houses six sets of Grotesques painted from 1666 to 1670 by Léonard Gonthier that separate the imposing mythological paintings.
