Dominated by a Templars' fortress

The village of Castelbouc is located in the Causse Méjean, in the Gorges du Tarn. Its troglodytes houses are half clinging to the sides of the Causse. Traces of sauropods (very tall herbivorous dinosaurs) were found in a cave near the submersible bridge leading to the village. Castelbouc, which almost disappeared in 1971 before inhabitants returned, is dominated by the ruins of an inaccessible 12th-century castle. The legend tells that only goats could climb up to the Templars' fortress, hence the name of the village.
