In walruses, the large dominant males are recognizable to their overall volume well above that of females, the size of their tusks and their sparse and whitish coat. Aged of 12 years and more, they are those who will be able to mate with females after carefully choosing their location on the pack ice according to its condition and the abundance of nutritive resources. The dominant male occupies the central position in the group and swims in the lead.
