Today, the Savon de Marseille has fallen into the public domain and is not protected. 95% of the so-called Marseille soaps are not made in Marseille and often not even in France. To resist the counterfeits flooding the markets and tourist shops, the Fer à Cheval soap factory has obtained the EPV (Living Heritage Company) and OFG (French Guaranteed Origin) labels. It has also filed a request for an IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) recognizing its ancestral manufacture and offering clear information to the consumer.
