Dole is a town in the Jura department with a diverse history and architecture, influenced by the different kingdoms which fought for its conquest. The former capital of Franche-Comté, it was a prosperous town in the county of Burgundy which over the centuries hosted the most prestigious political and religious institutions (residence of the counts, parliament, university, Jesuit college, etc.) until it was attached to the kingdom of France in 1678.
