The town of Dole is located in the Franche-Comté part of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, in the north of the Jura department, about 6.2 and 15.5 miles (10 and 25 km) from the Burgundy departments of Côte-d'Or and Saône-et-Loire. It is the most populous city in the Jura department with 23,770 inhabitants in 2018. A sub-prefecture of the department, it is part of the eastern France's urban link, halfway between the two regional metropolises of Besançon and Dijon distant of about 27.9 miles (45 km).
