Ten intricate, hand-crafted steps

All the lacemakers of the Atelier National Conservatoire du Point d’Alençon (Point d’Alençon National Conservatory Workshop) know and master the ten steps necessary for the production of Point d’Alençon lace. Its complexity makes its mechanical reproduction impossible and participates in its uniqueness. The process starts with the artistic and technical drawing of the motif, followed by its quilting on a temporary parchment support. The lacemaker then traces the design onto two layers of canvas with two threads and creates the mesh network that forms the background of the lace. Then follow the filling of the dots of the decoration that specify the patterns, the ornamentations of the lace, the embroidery that brings relief to the lace, the lifting that separates the lace from its temporary support, and the trimming of the threads of the tracing. Finally, the lacemaker polishes the fillings of the lace.
