In most winegrowers' houses in Riquewihr, the porch or the facade has a niche in the center, reserved for a protective statuette. Some house protectors are saints (Helje), like Saint Joseph or Sainte Odile, sometimes it is the Virgin Mary. In all cases, the statuette aims to protect the occupants in the hands of God. It is also a sign of belonging to the Catholic faith. Protestant home would instead display a biblical text on a stone plaque.
