In prehistoric times, Przewalski horses were present throughout Europe and much of Asia as evidenced by hundreds of representations of wild horses dating from 9,000 to 30,000 years found in caves in France, Italy, Spain, Mongolia, and China. The species inevitably declined in the 19th century and only survived in zoos and parks after the capture of a few individuals. The Przewalski horse began to be reintroduced into the wild at the end of the 20th century, notably in Mongolia.
