Entire sections of Polynesian culture have been victims of forced Christianization. The harepure, houses of prayers, have generally been built on ancient marae, these open places of worship delimited by stones or basalt rocks. In Akamaru, the ancient polytheistic temples have disappeared, testifying to the weak preservation of the archaeological sites and vestiges of the past throughout the archipelago of Gambier.
