The Arctic zone is experiencing the strongest and fastest earth warming in 40 years. The reduction of its pack ice, which acts as a reflector of solar energy, is both a consequence and a cause of the warming of the region. The reduction of the surface of the pack ice and the melting of its snow lead to a summer warming of the ocean, itself responsible for the delayed formation of the seasonal pack ice, its lesser thickness and its anticipated melting .
