When living in wetland areas, the great egret feeds mainly on fish, snakes, amphibians, insects, and crustaceans. It may also eat lizards, birds and small mammals when living on drier land. It waits often motionless until prey comes close enough to catch it. It unfolds its long neck and spears the prey with its bill.
