For a long time, no building was erected on the island of Bagaud in the coastal archipelago of the Hyères Islands. Mainly known by hermit monks at the time of the development of Christianity, it was part of the marquisate of the Golden Islands (Bagaud, Port-Cros, Le Levant) founded by King Francis I during the Renaissance. In 1531, the monarch gave it to Bertrand d'Ornesan, an army general, the first in a series of noble owners. It was only in the 18th century, against the backdrop of the War of the Spanish Succession, that the island of Bagaud was flanked by four military batteries.
