In less than ten years, a group of lawyers and bankers made the right bank of the Drochon, a long ribbon of dunes and tamarisk, a fashionable seaside resort. Houlgate's villas multiplied along with the town hall and an Eiffel-style covered market. The Belle Epoque district, along Avenue Landry, abounds with Norman, Gothic, and Renaissance villas. The ridges bloom with glazed polychromy and sometimes take the form of dragons, chimeras, squirrels, or even boots.
