From the 17th century, Saint-Tropez, placed under the protection of a royal garrison installed in its citadel, saw its traditional activities of fishing, shipyards, trade, and agriculture develop. At the same time, the city provided numerous sailors and navigators to defend its coast and the Kingdom. The most renowned of them was Pierre-André de Suffren (1729-1788), an officer and commander-in-chief of the royal fleet, appointed as bailiff by Louis XVI. In 1866, a statue to his effigy was erected on the city's port.
