The prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes department, Nice is the second-largest city in the Provence-Alpes-Côtes d'Azur region of southern France. It also constitutes the fifth largest city in the country, with 341,032 inhabitants in 2018. Nice extends along the Baie des Anges between sea and mountains on the shores of the Mediterranean, about 18.6 mi (30 km) west of the border with Italy.
