The abbey enclosure built at the time of Cluny II (915-1018) and enlarged during Cluny III (1088-1130) is partially preserved, mainly on the north side of the abbey. It partly encompasses the city wall, which is more recent. It has retained two gates - the Porte d'Honneur and the Porte des Jardins - from the original enclosure as well as five towers - the Tour des Fromages, the Tour du Moulin, the small Tour de Guet or Tour de Buttevant, the Tour Ronde, and the Tour Fabry - out of the original fifteen.
