The forts of La Hougue and Tatihou have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2008. At a height between 10 and 20 ft (3 and 6 m), a 2,952 ft (900 m) long dyke joins Fort de la Hougue. Reinforced by Vauban in 1694, the fort consists of a 65 ft (20 m) high tower pierced with loopholes. Moats surround its enclosure protected by a drawbridge, and its artillery platform is equipped with six cannons. A similar structure rises 1,7 miles (2.75 km) away on the island of Tatihou. The English attempted an invasion of La Hougue in 1708 but failed thanks to the crossfire of the two forts.
