Two architects for a single monument

At the end of his life, in 1715, the Sun King Louis XIV saw the Hôtel Royal des Invalides as the most useful work of his reign. In 1670, he ordered and financed the construction of a hospital-hospice for old soldiers who were sick or injured during military campaigns. From 1671 to 1675, the work was directed by the architect Libéral Bruant. The soldiers were housed there from 1674 and the buildings were completed in 1679. The architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart was then responsible for the construction of the churches. Louis XIV had to wait until 1706 to inaugurate the Dome Church, after 35 years of work.
