The Tour Barberousse rises in the coastal village of Gruissan in the Aude department. It overlooks the ruins of a fortified castle labeled a Historical Monument on April 14, 1948. The tower is one of the last vestiges of the fortress built at the end of the 10th century. It aimed to monitor the surroundings of Narbonne's port and to protect the city from raids by Saracens pirates. Built on a rocky and steep hill, the Tour Barberousse was destroyed by order of Richelieu in the 17th century.
